How to release wire from light switch. Black wires that go to black or brass screws copper or green ground wires attached to green or copper screws and neutral white wires. Gently pull the entire light switch assembly outward away from the wall so that the wire terminals on both sides of the switch are exposed and able to be easily worked with using a screwdriver. Connect the source wire to the bottom terminal of the switch and the other black wire to the top terminal.
This clamp is designed to grip the bare wire securely once it is inserted in the hole and it can be released only if you insert the tip of the small screwdriver into the release slot next to the opening. A standard single pole light switch will simply require you to attach the black load wire into it and then the black wire leaving the switch and to your lights. Drilling with a drill bit a little larger than the hole with break off a bit of Bakelite and you are most of the way home.
If you get yourself a thin pick to fit into the holes and just circle the wire to hit a spring you need to push down in order to release the wire. In this picture you can see the strip gauge on the back of the switch. Push the wire IN while you push the press-to-release make sure the tool you use reaches into the press-to-release hole far enough then still holding in with the tool pull the wire out.
These two varieties of electrical switches are called power-through switches and end-line switches and the diagrams below explain how each type works. Before working with wiring of any sort be sure to turn the power off at your electrical panel to ensure your safety. I have a surefire method to release the wire.
This gauge is when you want to use the quick-connect method when wiring a light switch. Insert the soldering pick or small nail in the quick-release hole depressing the spring tension and releasing its grip on the copper wire. Disconnect the wires from the back-wired outlet.
Simply strip the wire to the length specified and push the wire into the hole. The way a light switch is wired depends on whether the power comes into the light box or the switch box first. Disconnect the live wire from the switch and splice it together with the black wire going to your new outlet adding a 6-inch length of spare black wire of the same gauge to make a pigtail.
In this case you will see two black wires hot two white wires neutral and two bare. Place the blade of the proper size screwdriver in the screwdriver release slot and push down on the screwdriver while pulling on the wire with the pliers. Power to the Switch.
For the first configuration the power comes to the switch and then goes to the light. Disconnect the old switch by removing the screws. There are three types of wires that run to most switches.
